How to Analyse Quarterly Results

A framework for reading quarterly results, YoY growth, QoQ changes, margins, guidance and cash-flow signals.

Quarterly results can move stocks sharply, but one quarter should be placed in a longer trend.

YoY first

Compare with the same quarter of the prior year to reduce seasonality distortion.

QoQ carefully

Sequential changes can be useful but are often seasonal. Understand the business cycle before drawing conclusions.

Margins and earnings

Check revenue, operating profit, PAT, EPS and margin movement. Investigate whether changes are operational or one-off.

Forward indicators

Read management commentary, capacity additions, order inflow, volumes and guidance where disclosed, while distinguishing company statements from verified outcomes.
